Definition of Repeater or Repeating Rifle or Shotgun

Definition:

Once upon a time, a gun could only fire one time before it had to be reloaded. When innovation and invention resulted in a type of firearm that could be fired multiple times each time it was loaded, it was a major achievement - and resulted in a major advantage on the battlefield. The term "repeater" was employed to tout this new feature, and to differentiate guns having this feature from single shot firearms.

"Repeater" generally refers to long guns, and the terms "repeating rifle" and "repeating shotgun" are not uncommon, and were in widespread use many years. These days, guns are often assumed to be repeaters unless they are referred to as single-shot.

Repeater refers to any firearm that can be fired multiple times between loading, no matter what type of action the gun has.
