Children" s Books By Shirley Hughes

Shirley Hughes is a pioneer for kid's books and is one of several most liked authors and illustrators today. She has written over seventy books, that contain the Alfie and Dogger collection and illustrated lots more by other writers. Shirley continues to be published all over the world and decades of kids have grown up fascinated and pleased by her stories, and which over the years has won her major awards.

She has won the Kate Greenaway Medal twice and has been awarded the OBE for her distinguished service to children's publications. In 2007, Dogger was chosen as the UK's preferred Kate Greenaway Medal-winning book of all time.

Dogger will be able to strike a chord with any kids aged 3 and above who have ever mislaid their much loved cuddly toy. Dogger is described as a worn dog with crooked ears and a friendly face that means everything to Dave, therefore when he is lost, Dave is totally panic-stricken. Shirleys inspiration for drawing and thinking up stories began at some point in her childhood years during the second world war in the Wirral, Lancashire, which in turn developed into a lifelong interest in images that told tales. She attributes her love of drawing and writing to the happy childhood she had, in which much time was spent thinking up imaginary worlds and sometimes visiting the cinema.

Her debut novel was entitled Hero on a Bicycle. It is a thrilling and tender story with a dash of romance, set against a dramatic background of Italy during the war. Based on Hughes' personal experience of seeing Florence not long after the Second World War, it is a friendly, affectionate tale of courage against the odds, which deals honestly with the brutality of war, however maintains a unique understanding and lightness of touch. Beautifully printed in a purposely retro, reflective fashion, it also features Hughes' recognisable black and white illustrations.

Her books about Alfie get their charm from traditional elements. At the same time, they show how experimental an artist and designer Shirley Hughes is. Starting with Up and Up, her wordless picture book, via the split-screen technique of Alfie Gets in First, to the verdant cinemascope of Enchantment in the Garden, Hughes never stops innovating.

Alfie is also great at teaching children their alphabet and numbers. Learning to count with Alfie could not be much easier since his world is full of numbers. By utilizing their fingers and toes and having fun with Alfie, little children shall learn to count. The exact simplicity is attached to Alfies alphabet book also, beginning with A for Alfie, B for bedtime and Shirley walks every child through the complete alphabet representing certain things which can be found in Alfies world that start with each letter.
