How to Remove a Rust Ring

    • 1). Scrub the rust ring with an angled toilet bowl brush. Scrub back and forth along the ring with the brush. Flush the toilet to remove the rust residue. Apply toilet bowl cleaner to the ring if the stain does not come out, and continue to scrub.

    • 2). Add a small amount of water to Barkeeper's friend or similar cleaning product; oxalic acid also works well. Form a paste by mixing the two ingredients and spread the paste onto the stain. Allow it to soak in for up to two minutes, then scrub the rust ring away with a soft scouring pad. This solution works on stainless steel appliances.

    • 3). Combine salt and white vinegar in equal parts to form a paste. Spread the paste onto the stain and wait until it draws out the rust. Or, apply the white vinegar right on the stain. Add the salt immediately and allow the mixture to draw out the rust stain. This formula works on clothing and fabrics. If possible, let the garment sit in the sun while air drying. Clean off paste with a sponge and rinse with water.
