How to Paint a Motorcycle Exhaust Black

    • 1). Remove the exhaust components from the motorcycle.

    • 2). Clean the surface of the exhaust pipes and muffler with a degreaser and warm water. Use a wire brush to scrub off any corrosion and heavy buildup. Rinse the exhaust off with warm water.

    • 3). Scour the exhaust pipes and muffler with coarse 80-grit sandpaper. This will help the paint to adhere to the metal surfaces of the exhaust pipes and muffler. Clean the exhaust again to remove any dust that could interfere with the paint.

    • 4). Apply high-temperature primer to the exhaust pipes and muffler, spraying light, even strokes along the length of the pipe. Let the paint dry for at least 10 minutes and apply a second coat of primer.

    • 5). Spray a layer of your high-temperature base color to the exhaust. Again, use light, even strokes and allow the paint to dry for 10 minutes before applying a second coat.

    • 6). Cover the base coat with two to three layers of high-temperature clear coat to protect the base coat and to add a shiny finish to the exhaust pipes.

    • 7). Reinstall the exhaust system onto your motorcycle. Set the paint by starting the motorcycle and letting the exhaust warm up. Stop the motor and allow the exhaust to cool.
