How to Paint a Headboard
- 1). Sand the headboard with an orbital sander or sanding block to create a rough surface so the paint will adhere better. Wear a mask to protect yourself from any dust this may produce. The old paint or finish does not need to be completely removed unless it is peeling or bubbling. Sand to smooth any scratches and fill undesired holes or cracks with putty. Wipe the headboard with tack cloth to remove the dust from sanding.
- 2). Prime the headboard using a paintbrush and primer formulated to work with latex paint. Primer will allow for more even coverage of the paint. Brush the primer on in the direction of the wood grain. Let primer dry completely.
- 3). Paint the headboard using a paintbrush and latex paint. Paint in the same direction as the wood grain. If brushstrokes are visible, Martha Stewart Living suggests smoothing them by wiping over wet paint with a dry brush. Let the first coat dry fully and add a second coat for additional coverage.
- 4). Spray a coat of polyurethane onto the headboard to protect it from scratches. Hold a spray can of polyurethane about 12 inches from the headboard and spray evenly, keeping the spray can in constant motion to ensure even coverage. Let your refinished headboard dry completely before attaching to your bed.
