About the Department:
The objective of the George Warren Brown School of Social Work is to create positive social change through path-breaking research and educational excellence. The School seeks to educate and prepare future social work and public health leaders in areas of policy, practice, and research; pioneer research and apply results to impact policy and practice locally, nationally, and internationally; and collaborate with organizations to use evidence to improve access to and quality of social services and to address social and economic justice.

Social work at Washington University dates back to 1909 when the University became the home of the struggling St. Louis School of Social Economy, which became the George Warren Brown School of Social Work in July 1945.

About the Program:
The MSW is a 2 year 60 credit program with three components: Foundation Curriculum, Concentration Curriculum, and Specializations. The Foundation and Concentration Curriculum are required; however, the Specializations are optional and use elective credits. Seven foundation courses cover the core professional body of knowledge required by the social work profession. Foundation courses introduce students to social work practices with systems of all sizes ranging from individuals to families and from organizations to communities. After completing your foundation work, students select a concentration:

• Children, Youth, and Families
• Gerontology
• Health
• Mental Health
• Social and Economic Development
• Individualized concentration designed by the student and advisor

Criteria for Admission
1.

Completion of a U.S. bachelor's degree or its equivalent, with competitive grades, from an accredited institution.

2. Transcript indicating a GPA of B or higher.
3. Submission of a professional statement that demonstrates your rationale for pursuing the masters program, why the Brown School is a good fit with your goals, potential for leadership, professional or volunteer experience, and analytical and communications skills.
   4. A second admissions essay.
5. Three letters of recommendation
6. The GRE is not required for admission to the MSW degree program.

How Much is Tuition?
Tuition fees for the Brown School’s MSW program is based on each credit hour taken. Each credit hour is for 2009-2010 is $1,006. For the MSW program, tuition for the 2009-2010 academic year based on 30 credit hours would be $30,180.

Is Financial Aid Available?
About 90% of the MSW class apply for and receive some form of grant and/or scholarship assistance.
