How to Replace an Ignition Switch in a Whirlpool Dryer

    Older Models

    • 1). Disconnect the control panel console from the dryer by removing the two screws at each end of the console with a screwdriver. Lift up on the control console to release the connecting tabs. Flip the control console back into the service position. It will rest on its hinges.

    • 2). Pull the control knob off of the ignition switch shaft using your hands.

    • 3). Disconnect the wire harness that connects to the ignition switch terminal. At the connection, grip the wire lead with needle-nose pliers and pull the leads off of the terminals.

    • 4). Remove the ignition switch by unscrewing the two mounting screws with a screwdriver. Position the new ignition switch in place and attach it with the two mounting screws.

    • 5). Connect the wire harness leads to the terminals on the ignition switch by pushing them over the terminals with your hand.

    • 6). Push the knob onto the ignition switch shaft and reattach the control panel console to the top of the dryer.

    Newer Models

    • 1). Pull the dryer away from the wall so that you have plenty of access to the rear of the dryer. Remove the two screws that connect the back of the top cover to the rear of the dryer using a screwdriver. Lift the rear of the top cover with your hands and unhook it from the front tabs. Set the top cover out of the way of the work area.

    • 2). Remove the ignition switch from the mounting by inserting a screwdriver into the two locking tabs on the side of the ignition switch. Pull the switch out of the mounting location.

    • 3). Disconnect the wires from the push button station by pressing in on the plastic locking tabs with your hand. Once the tabs are pressed in, pull the wire harness off of the switch.

    • 4). Connect the wires to the new ignition switch by snapping the harness into the terminal. Insert the ignition switch into the mounting location and press it in with your hand until it snaps into place.

    • 5). Reattach the top panel to the dryer and secure it with the mounting screws at the rear of the dyer.
