The Light and Sound Show in Shaniwarwada
Shaniwarwada the pride of Pune tourism is an ancient monument built in 1746, which is located in the heart of the city. This major attraction of Pune was once the seat of Peshwa rulers who were heading the Maratha empire until there defeat and surrender to the British Empire. The light and sound show organized by the Maharashtra tourism department is the not to be missed activity during your visit of Shaniwarwada.
This prime historic monument of the city was constructed by Peshwa Baji Rao in 1729 which made its mark in the history of Pune city. This palace fort is popular for its vast courtyards, fountains, green lawns, audience halls and the subsequent residential complexes. During its construction the raw material used was brought from selected sources like teak wood was brought from the jungles of Junnar and stone from Chinchwad. This monument was officially opened in the month of July 1732. Additions to the original structure were made periodically which ranged from the fortification walls, gates, bastions and court halls. The major attractions of the fort are its huge and strong gates, which include Dilli Darwaza which is the main gate of the fort complex facing towards Delhi. The reason behind keeping the direction of the main door towards Delhi was nothing else but the indication of ambitious nature of Baji Rao who had great ambitions of conquering the Mughal Empire in Delhi. The doors were big enough so that even elephants decorated with seating canopies can even pass through these gates. The gates are fitted with twelve inch steel spikes arranged in a grid fixed at an approximate level of elephants used during fighting. This palace complex was built by a Rajasthani Kshatriya who was awarded the prestigious title of €Naik by the Peshwas. He made the gates so stronger that the attacking army will not be able to break open the gates using different techniques. And even in case the doors were force opened there were many other hurdles kept in the way of the marching enemy.
Mastani Darwaja which is facing north was strictly used by Bajirao's wife named Mastani, while moving out of the palace. Khadiki Darawaja which is facing east was named for its armored window. Ganesh Darwaja was facing south-east, whereas Jambhul Darwaja was facing south. Some of the important buildings of the complex are the court reception hall, dance hall and the old Arse Mahal. The halls were adorned with arches, carved teak arches, carved creepers and flowers. Beautiful glass chandeliers, floors embellished with high quality marble and the Persian rugs added to the richness of the palace premises. The buildings designed by some of the renowned artists were the sign of prospering Maratha Empire in those days. One of the seven storey's buildings in the complex was pride of the Peshwa kingdom. The impressive lotus-shaped fountain known as Hazari Karanje was also the top most attraction in those days.
Like Shaniwarwada there are many other captivating attractions of Pune which surprise the visitors.
