How to Write a Resume for Applying to College

    Create a College Resume

    • 1). Select a resume template from your computer documents or download a template online. Microsoft offers several resume templates that you can download to your computer. Using a template will help you to create a professional looking resume.

    • 2). Create your heading at the top of your resume. Your heading should have your name centered and in a larger, bold font. Underneath your name use a smaller font that is not bold. With the smaller font type your address, contact phone number and email address as well as your social security number, if requested by the college.

    • 3). Place your objective two spaces bellow the heading on your resume. Your objective should be one sentence that states what you want to pursue in college. An objective can be used to grab the attention of the administrator while highlighting who you are.

    • 4). Place your education information one space below your objective on your resume. Your education information should contain your high school, its location, the years you attended and your GPA. If you attended summer classes or camps outside of school that pertain to your desired college major, include that information as well.

    • 5). Place your volunteer work and extracurricular activities one space below your education. Include the name, the location, the amount of time and duties for your volunteer work and extracurricular activities. According to the College Board online information, there are colleges that give academic credit for volunteer work.

    • 6). Place your awards and achievements one space below your volunteer work and extracurricular activities. Include the types of awards and achievements you received as well as the dates you earned them.

    • 7). Place any work experience one space below your awards and achievements. Your work experience should list the name of the company, location, dates of employment, job title and duties.
