      Located almost 95 miles west of Minneapolis and about 62 miles south of St. Cloud, Willmar, Minnesota, is in the heart of Kandiyohi County. Far from being isolated, Willmar sits on the shores of Foot and Willmar lakes and offers biking, hiking, golf, and fishing. The county historical museum resides in Willmar and there are numerous festivals going on throughout the year.

    Glacial Lakes State Trail

    • Hike, bike, inline skate, or horseback ride along a 22-mile blacktop trail between Willmar and Hawick, or enjoy the separate grass trail. Scenery ranges from farmland and wetland to woodland. Trail is open for snowmobiling in winter.

    The Mikkelson Collection, Inc.

    • The Mikkelson Collection is a private museum showcasing more than 600 toy boats and motors, along with restored antique outboard motors and memorabilia. The best of the 300 Falls Flyers boats manufactured by Minnesota's Larson Boat Company from the 1930s to the 1950s are here in the world's premier collection, including the finest series of the "Jaguar of Boats." Call ahead to arrange a tour.

    Memorial Room in City Auditorium

    • Completed in 1937 as part of the Works Progress Administration, the Memorial Room in the Willmar City Auditorium features a painted mural of various conflicts and the ravages of war around the perimeter. Engraved stones from each state line the walls. The American Legion initiated this memorial to honor Minnesota veterans. Open to the public during office hours Monday through Friday.

    Kandiyohi County Historical Museum

    • The museum features Great Northern Steam locomotive engine #2523 and the Kandiyohi City Depot. Discover county history, American Indian artifacts, a horse-drawn fire engine, research center, and District #18 county school. Call ahead to request a tour of the Victorian Sperry House, built in 1893. Groups tours are available.

    Valley Golf Course

    • This 9-hole, par 35 public golf course is open daily April through October, 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Fees differ between weekdays and weekends.
