How to Draw a Flying Butterfly

    • 1). Draw a long diagonal line that inclines towards the top left corner of the page.

    • 2). Draw a large oval that covers the bottom two thirds of the diagonal line. Draw this oval so that it is symmetrically divided by the vertical line. This forms the body of the butterfly.

    • 3). Draw a circle on top of the oval. Make this circle cover the top one third of the diagonal line. This forms the head of the butterfly.

    • 4). Draw a large circle that lies vertically above the oval. Draw this circle so that the bottom of the circle and the top of the oval touch.

    • 5). Draw a short line at a 45 degree angle extending from the point where the oval and the first circle meet.

    • 6). Draw a small, skinny oval that is divided in half by the short diagonal line.

    • 7). Follow the left side and top of the short oval with your pencil, and draw a line that arcs downward over the top of the right side of the oval. Extend this line upward to meet the top left side of the large circle. Follow the top of the large circle, extending the line along the right side. When you pencil reaches a point halfway down the right side of the circle, extend the line diagonally at 45 degree angle to meet the body of the butterfly. This completes the outline of the wing.

    • 8). Draw a line along the top of the wing that mirrors the form of the wing. Draw this line a short distance away from the wing. Shade the space in between this line and the wing. This forms the back wing of the butterfly.

    • 9). Add two semicircles to the top of the small circle. Place these semicircles at the point where the first diagonal line touches the top of the circle. This forms the antennae of the butterfly.

    • 10

Shade the body and head of the butterfly darkly by applying pressure to your pencil.

    • 11

Erase the center line in the small oval.

    • 12

Color the butterfly wing in the color of your choice.
