How to Get Rid of Gnats in My Potted Plants

    • 1). Remove 1 to 2 inches of potting soil from the top of the pot and replace it with fresh potting soil.

    • 2). Apply about a 1/2-inch deep layer of peat moss on top of infected plants' soil.

    • 3). Place sticky fly tape on the soil of the infected plants and check the tapes every day, replacing them when they become full of gnats or lose their stickiness. Sticky fly tape and gnat tape are available at most garden supply stores.

    • 4). Kill the gnats by making them sick with a dose of Bti (Bacillus thuringiensis subspecies Israelensis), that naturally kills flies and gnats and may be purchased at some garden centers. Follow the packaging instructions for specific information on using B.t.i.

    • 5). Apply a pyrethrin insecticide on the soil of the infected plants, following the manufacturer's instructions, if all other measures fail.
