How to Install a Drain for a Gutter Down Spout

    Above Ground

    • 1). Prepare the area where you are going to lay the pipe. Remove any shrubs or plants that will be in the way. Grade the area to make sure the pipe will point downwards.

    • 2). Place a piece of 4-inch PVC piping under the end of the gutter downspout, and point it in the direction you want the water to drain.

    • 3). Place an elbow and drain adapter on the end of the PVC piping next to the house. Use PVC cement to secure the drain adapter and elbow.

    • 4). Attach the elbow and drain adapter to the downspout.

    Under Ground

    • 1). Dig a trench that is 12 inches deep and 8 inches wide where the drain pipe will be installed. Be aware the trench must point downwards.

    • 2). Shovel 2 inches of crushed stone along the length of the trench.
