The Deering Estate at Cutler is a 444-acre historic and environmental preserve that offers a variety of activities suitable for children and adults of all ages. It is managed by Miami-Dade Parks & Recreation on behalf of the State of Florida. The estate features historic buildings, nature trails and canoe trips out to Chicken Key.

Deering Estate Buildings

The estate features two historic buildings:
  • Richmond Cottage is the original building erected on the site by Dr. Samuel H. Richmond in 1896. Richmond was a surveyor for the Florida East Coast Railroad who built the home for his family. The cottage is notable for having one of the first telephones in the region.

  • Stone House was built in 1922 after Charles Deering purchased the estate and decided to make it his residence. The home is built of poured concrete covered in decorative limestone. It is connected to the cottage by walkways on both the first and second floors.

Chicken Key

Chicken Key is a seven-acre mangrove island reachable by canoe from the Deering Estate. This nature preserve is home to many species of birds and you're likely to see some marine wildlife, such as manatees or sea turtles during your visit. You can either bring your own kayak or rent one at the estate.

Admission to the estate is $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 4-14. Admission is free for holders of the Go Miami Card. The estate is open from 10AM-5PM every day except Thanksgiving and Christmas.
