What is a Toilet Auger?

    Description

    • The toilet auger is a flexible steel coil 3 to 6 feet long shaped like a "J." It slides down the toilet's drain and breaks apart or retrieves the clogged object.

    Use

    • Toilet augers have a crank attached to the top. Turning the crank will feed the steel coil down the drain.

    Components

    • The end of the auger has a corkscrew-shaped wire to break up clogs. A plastic boot at the bend rests on the toilet bowl and protects the porcelain. The hand crank tops off the auger.

    When to Use

    • Most clogs can be remedied using a plunger first. When this doesn't work, turn to the toilet auger.

    Drain Snake vs. Auger

    • Although toilet augers are also called snakes, a drain snake is mostly used on sinks. The toilet auger is a snake specially designed for toilet drains and traps.
