Considerations for Women and Hair Transplants

When most people of think of hair transplants, they think of a middle-aged man trying to reclaim his youth with a fuller head of hair. However, in recent years, more and more women have been undergoing transplants. In fact, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, more than 5,000 women had them in 2008.

In the past, when women noticed thinning hair, they either bought and wore wigs or just dealt with it. Now, hair transplantation is an option for women if they meet certain conditions and have the cash - anywhere from $3,000 to $15,000 – to pay for it.

Does it Work?

Hair transplantation has been proven to work for many women. Women who have had a transplant done feel more self-confident. When done correctly, a transplant looks realistic. Even professional hairdressers don't even notice the difference. In fact, they recommend clients to seek a transplant if they are tired of hiding their thinning hair.

However, of the millions of women that suffer from hair loss, not all of them qualify for a transplant. Many women suffer hair loss due to medical conditions such as thyroid conditions and anemia. In addition, certain drugs can cause hair loss as well. A woman cannot be considered for a transplant until her medical issues are under control.

Another thing to consider is that the transplant is typically done from other hair on the woman's scalp. So she must have fuller, thicker hair somewhere else on her head. Unfortunately, this is not common, especially as a woman ages. Menopause and other hormonal conditions can cause thinning hair all over the scalp, not just in one area. It is possible to attempt a transplant using donor hair, but there are stability issues. The transplant works best when a woman uses her own hair.

Consider the Surgeon and Hair Quality

Most of the success lies with the surgeon. If you choose someone who has very little experience performing transplants, then the transplant may not come out as planned. It takes a team of medical professionals to get the transplant done right due to the precision needed to get the existing hairs transplanted properly.

Hair quality and quality are also factors. The more, the better. Coarse hair is better than fine hair. If the hair is not stable enough, the hair could fall out after surgery. You could lose more hair than you have gained or it could all fall out altogether.

Get the Hair You Desire

Although hair loss in women is not as common as hair loss in men, hair restoration in Toronto for women has proven to work. That is, there are still many options available to regrow hair or gain more fullness without the use of wigs. Hair transplantation is just one of the options available.
