Are You Also Puzzled As to When the Right Time is to Plant?

Being new to gardening, I frequently find myself being puzzled as to when the right time would be to plant certain garden plants and foliage.
Many seasoned gardeners will probably tell you from experience as to when the right time is to plant, but these recommendations are sometimes confusing or more often than not plain paradoxical.
The problem I have is working out whether to wait until there is no possibility of heavy rainfall or frost occurring.
I also find it hard to decide on which plants to start from seeds and which to put into the garden after they have started growing already.
This year has been pretty confusing thus far as the weather has been unpredictable all the way with some days appearing to have all four seasons at once.
We chose the first week of May as the best time to start planting but, naturally spring has been running its course since the end of March leaving many of us thinking that May would be the best time to plant.
Sadly, I followed this rule thinking that spring was well on its way just to find out that I actually did not know when to plant my garden.
I finished up hopelessly making an attempt to cover the whole garden area with a tarp to offer protection to the fragile budding plants from a frosty passing.
Some made it through the unseasonable cold snap while others unfortunately did not and I think that I might have even caused more damage by covering the poor things.
The entire quandary of determining when to do some planting is an ongoing debate in our home as my husband fully believes that planting during the course of a full moon would be best and of course this would be fine if only the full moon happened each and every weekend.
I hate the concept of only having one chance to plant a garden needless to say that the full moon also seem to appear at the same time as the cold, stormy days that are far from being appropriate for the outside.
Another problem we are facing in deciding when to plant our garden is our newborn baby girl as she only likes to sleep for a couple of hours every day and scheduling things around her sleep schedule is far from being the best road to take.
Balancing her schedule, the ever fading moon and the possibility of frost leaves us with a narrow window of time and occasionally it is better to just let nature take its course.
