Metformin Dangers
- Metformin, a treatment for non-insulin dependent diabetes (type 2) helps regulate the amount of glucose the body retains from food. It also lowers glucose amounts produced by the liver.
- Taking Metformin can cause serious side effects. The rarest, but deadliest, side effect is a condition known as lactic acidosis. Other side effects include diarrhea, constipation, stomach ache, bloating, muscle pain, heartburn, skin flush, gas, headache, coughing, sneezing and runny nose.
- The side effects from Metformin, if any, generally disappear a few weeks after treatment begins. However, if symptoms persist, contact your health care provider.
- Before taking Metformin, notify your health care provider if you have experienced a stroke or heart attack. Moreover, if you suffer from lung, kidney or liver disease, Metformin may not be considered a safe treatment.
- Eating a healthful diet and regular exercise is recommended while taking Metformin. Healthy lifestyle changes combined with medication can lessen the harmful effects of diabetes.
