Is Opting for Hospice Giving Up?

Many terminally ill patients may fear that opting for hospice is a sign that they have given up on life.
This is not so.
In choosing hospice, one is not necessarily giving up hope in life but is looking to live the rest of their days in dignity, and in a meaningful way.
They are open to preparing themselves to accept the inevitable without fear.
They want to die in a peaceful way.
This is a period to prepare one's self spiritually as well as physically for what is inevitable and also to find a new meaning to your last days, and they can spend with their loved ones.
When a person opts for hospice it means that they have already suffered a lot of pain and gone through treatment which is not always painless.
They now want to be left in peace and only go through medication which will relive them of uncomfortable symptoms.
They no longer want to go through radiation, chemotherapy, invasive diagnostic tests and several admissions to hospitals.
Now what they would prefer is to have their remaining days lived with quality and not with quantity.
Once people know that there is no chance of getting better they would much rather stop running after doctors and hospitals and spend time with their family and friends at home instead.
If they have the strength they could go for the holiday which they missed out on and live the life that they have always wanted to.
This is not giving up on life but utilizing the time of their last days to make life more meaningful at this stage.
Hospice will only provide them with a means to find support in times of extreme discomfort and pain and also give respite to them and their care-givers at home.
