How to Install Wood Ceilings

    • 1). Use the electronic stud-finder to locate and mark each of the ceiling joists. Extend the marks across the whole ceiling, using your level and pencil.

    • 2). Measure the side of the ceiling where you want to start the planking. Transfer the measurement to a ceiling plank. Cut it straight across on a miter saw.

    • 3). Lift the plank to the ceiling, on the side where you measured, with the grooved side of the plank facing the wall and sitting 1/4 inch out from it. That gap will allow the wood of the ceiling planks to expand over time. Secure the board to the ceiling by shooting trim nails through the surface, straight up, putting in two nail at each point where the board crosses a joist.

    • 4). Repeat the process of measuring and cutting for the next plank. Install it alongside the first plank, pressing it so the tongue and groove fitting are tight. Secure the second plank by shooting one trim nail through the outside edge of the board, just above the tongue, at each point where it crosses a joist.

    • 5). Install the rest of the boards in the same way, working your way across the ceiling. Use a table saw to length-cut the final board, so it fits against the ending wall with a 1/4 space there.

    • 6). Measure, cut and install ceiling trim around the perimeter of the ceiling, covering up the spaces that you left there.
