Almond Milk - Even My Children Like It
Children are finicky eaters.
When my children were younger, if their corn touched their potatoes on their plate, they became upset.
Once my daughter's taco broke in two before she could bite it and she refused to eat anymore.
When I switched from whole milk to two-percent milk, we battled about the taste difference so much so that, for a while, I bought two-percent for me and whole milk for them.
When I decided to buy milk made from almonds, I thought the same battle would ensue.
I figured on transition time of at least three months.
Boy was I wrong.
The first day I introduced almond milk; my oldest daughter loved it and asked for more after her first cup.
My younger daughter tried it and gave her approval as well.
They began drinking almond milk alone and with cereal.
Soon, they began drinking as many as five cups per day each.
When I saw the milk disappearing so rapidly, I cornered my daughters and asked why they were drinking so much milk.
My older daughter said "This milk is good.
I can drink it plain and with my cereal" My younger daughter said "Yeah, I like it with cereal and with my pop tarts".
I said to my daughters, does the aftertaste bother you? They both said "What aftertaste?" Apparently, the almond taste was so mild, my daughters were not bothered by it.
Eventually, my daughters did something that I did not expect.
Instead of drinking the milk made from almonds until it was completely gone, when the supply ran low they saved some for the next day.
They would then substitute cow's milk (my husband still drinks it) into their cereal until the almond milk was replenished.
I asked them about this too.
They said we can't waste good almond milk on cereal when the supply is low.
So we eat cow's milk with our cereal from time to time just to help the milk made from almonds last longer.
Of course, I realized I needed to increase the amount of almond milk purchased on grocery shopping trips.
I now know to stock up, especially when there is a good sale.
In all honesty, I am happy to have this problem.
I am glad to have found a milk product that tastes great, is nutritious and is well received by my children.
