Freemason symbols descended from pictographs from ancient Sumeria, circa 3000 B.C., Persia, and Mesopotamia. These powerful symbols were used in large part to teach new members without having to read books, which were hard to come by in past centuries, and because many people were illiterate, especially during the Middle Ages. - Many Freemason symbols are architect tools.square image by Paul Moore from Fotolia.com
The Square and Compass is the universal symbol of Freemasonry. The square represents morality, and the compass represents boundaries. This symbol is worn on jewelry, clothing, and displayed at lodges. A square and compass are tools to build strong foundations, with great precision, and it is part of the three lights of the Free Masons, which is the square, the compass and the holy book. - The Masonic Blazing Star represents the star which guided the wise men to Bethlehem. It is used in masonic lodges on furniture and in the floor paving. The star represents God, the sun and beauty, and it symbolizes Moses receiving the Ten Commandments on Mount Sinai.
- Three squares represent the 47th Problem of Euclid, or the 47th Proposition of Euclid, which is also known as the Pythagorean Theorem. This symbol of three black squares relates to a right angled triangle, where the square of the two sides is equal to the square of the hypotenuse. When the square root is taken of the first four numbers, 1, 4,9, and 16 and then each square is subtracted from the next one, you get 3, 5, and 7, sacred numbers for Freemasons.
- The eye of God is symbolized in the Masonic Eye, where the divine is ever present and all-seeing in the universe. This image is used in Egyptian and Hebrew culture, and alludes to Solomon in Proverbs 15:13, "The eyes of the Lord are in every place, beholding the evil and the good."
- The letter "G" represents the great architect of the universe and geometry. In Hebrew, the language that the Bible was written in, "G" is Gheemel or Gimel, which has a numerical value of 3, a sacred Mason number. "G" is the third letter of many of the ancient languages, such as Greek, Aramaic, and Syriac.
- The Trestle board, or tracing board, is the design board for the Master Architect to draw his plans to direct his workers. A trestle board has a framework of vertical legs with one or more horizontal crosspieces to display an item, like an easel. When the Freemasons held secret meetings, a rectangular square was drawn in the dirt to represent the lodge. It became a cloth or rug that could be rolled away at the end of a meeting, and later the cloth or rug was placed on a trestle board so that all the members knew what their contribution was to the lodge.
