How to Build a Utility Trailer
- 1). Use the hacksaw to cut out three 4-foot-long pieces of 2-by-2-inch square metal tubing; these will become cross members. Also, cut two 5-foot-long pieces of 2-by-2-inch tubing to act as the sides of the trailer. Use the drill to drill holes in the ends of the pieces of metal, and then connect the ends of the 4-foot-long pieces to the 5-foot-long pieces to form a rectangle with the lag bolts. Insert the last 4-foot crosspiece to complete the trailer's main frame.
- 2). Attach the light trailer axle to the middle cross member of the trailer's frame using the U-bolts. Use the hacksaw to cut another 5-foot length of 2-by-2-inch pipe to act as the tongue of the trailer. Use two lag bolts to attach the tongue to the front of the trailer frame. Follow the manufacturer's instructions to attach the bolt on the trailer hitch to the front of the tongue.
- 3). Cut the treated lumber to 5-foot lengths and then bolt them onto the top of the trailer frame with the lag bolts. This will form your bed, so you can either butt the boards directly up against one another or you can leave small gaps between the boards to allow dirt and water to fall through.
