How do I Minimize Oak Grain in a Hardwood Floor?

    • 1). Sand existing wood floors down to the bare wood with an electric sander and remove all dust. Floor sanders are available for rent at most home improvement stores.

    • 2). Fill large areas of dark grain, knot holes or cracks with a water-based wood filler such as Pacific Filler, using a trowel or putty knife according to container directions. Allow to dry for two hours.

    • 3). Apply stain with a paint roller and allow to dry. Choose a dark stain that closely matches the dark grain stripes in the wood.

    • 4). Apply one or more layers of polyurethane over the floor with a paint roller to provide durability.
