Forgetting What Is Behind
Many times we are bombarded with life's choices, but sometimes fear cringe in us knowing not what the future holds for us.
We begin to retract and lock ourselves in our past - our past successes or even past failures.
We remain in our old self.
It is when we lose faith in God that we fear to take a step toward the mark He has set for us.
Our souls' earnest yearning is to feel that confidence into something that will never fail, that will never run loose nor move, leading us to thinking that the only confidence we have is in Jesus.
He promised that 'He will never leave us, nor forsake us'.
We are not abandoned, but greatly loved and lavished in His goodness, for He gave His life that we may live.
His love is outstretched on earth to reach each and every soul waiting for Him to minister unto them, to be changed and renewed through Him.
Paul admonished in Ephesians 4:22-24, "You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.
" His character must be reflected in us, and as we behold Him, we become like Him in righteousness and holiness.
Our old self and our past, has its direct congruency.
But now we are called to put off our old self and our former way of life, and to put on the new self and follow the Godly way of life.
For it is the only way, we can find hope in life and confidence in our future, knowing that it is in God's hands.
In Philippians Paul explained, "Brethren, I do not consider myself to have taken hold of it.
But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining to what is ahead.
" (3:13) Most of us are stuck in the past in bitterness and pain, and forgetting the past is something hard to do, nevertheless we must learn.
Forgiveness is one key, to be able to let go and let live.
Forgiving others of the hurts they've caused us coupled with the pain we have suffered from, and forgiving ourselves too for the wrong decisions we have made, our failures and losses, and for the hurts we've caused, for then we can only begin to lighten up the load and lighten up our spirits.
It is a constant battle in our own souls to forgive and to forget, but through God's mercy and grace, we can overcome.
"Forgetting what is behind" does not stand alone, it is followed by "looking forward to what is ahead".
When we look forward, we press on.
Paul added on verse 14, "I press toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.
" No matter what filth you are in, how deeply buried you are in sin, you can arise and forget what is behind, and having that blessed hope in Jesus, look forward to what is ahead, His coming.
