The Scariest Horror Movie Scenes

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974): Door Slam

The matter-of-fact and yet brutal nature of Leatherface's first appearance -- capped by a forceful door slam -- isn't jump-out-of-your-seat scary as much as perpetually unnerving. You'd think the gallery of bones on the wall would dissuade anyone from strolling into the house, but I guess Kirk plays by his own rules.

The Thing (1982): Chest Defib

The grotesque, imaginative, out-of-left-field nature of this clip epitomizes why this John Carpenter remake has earned such a following over the years.

When a Stranger Calls (1979): "Have You Checked the Children?"

The whopping 20-minute opening captures the hair-raising essence of an urban legend (similar to Black Christmas's "call coming from inside the house" motif) and frankly, is pretty much the only reason to watch this movie.
