Five Minute or Less Film Festivals

    Northeast

    • Montgomery County Community College in suburban Philadelphia, PA hosts a film festival which challenges filmmakers to make a five minute film in five days or less. As of 2011, the top prize is $250 and the entry fee is $25 per team. The Fringe Wilmington Festival offers large cash prizes to the winning entries. However, contestants must make their five minute film within a span of 48 hours.

    West Coast

    • The CAL Five Minute Film Festival occurs at the Mount Hood Community College Visual Arts Theater, which is located in Portland, OR. The CAL Five Minute Film Festival is held annually. The Canadian province of British Columbia hosts a five minute film contest, which is part of the larger Powell River Film Festival. As of 2011, the cost to enter was $10. Contest winners are eligible for a wide variety of awards.

    Midwest

    • The University of Chicago hosts the "5 Minute Film Festival." It is only open to staff and employees of the university. A panel awards prizes according to numerous categories, such as "Most Humorous" or "Most Original." Glen Oak High School in North Canton, OH also hosts a five minute film festival called "Reel Awards." As of 2011, the festival is in its second year. Both local high school and college students may submit entries. The East Lansing Film Festival also sponsors a five minute film festival. The film must be made within a span of 48 hours.

    South

    • Atlanta, GA features the ATL Short Cuts Film Contest, which is part of the Atlanta Film Festival. The guidelines require filmmakers to make films about the city of Atlanta. Another requirement is for filmmakers to make their five minute film by using a camera phone or Flip video camera.
