Across the World to Find Freedom
Sitting at my tiny office cubicle, I stared out the window at the birds soaring through the clear blue sky. I found myself envying the birds because they could fly anywhere while I felt trapped in a cage of my own making. Everyday I endured 80 minutes of traffic to work, performed 9 hours of soul-crushing work, and felt like a zombie as I sat through another 80 minutes of traffic back home. Enough was enough, I needed a dramatic life makeover.
My solution was to take a two-week vacation to New Zealand and figure out how to live a happier fuller life. As soon as I stepped off the plane in New Zealand, I breathed in the fresh air and felt like my spirit was free to soar again. In the coming weeks I experienced every kind of outdoor/adrenaline activity imaginable, witnessed the most beautiful scenery, and developed a relationship with an Australian girl on my tour.
After experiencing the highs I felt in New Zealand and knowing how great it felt to be free, I went back to Los Angeles and quit my life-draining job. I planned a 6-week trip to Europe, Japan, and Australia to meet up with the Australian girl from my New Zealand trip. I had wanted to travel around the world my whole life but deprived myself of the joy for the sake of saving money. But that was the old me. The new me just wanted to experience life, have fun, and follow my heart instead of my brain. The trip was a success and I ended up developing a strong relationship with the Australian girl. In fact, a year later I moved to Melbourne Australia and married her.
While in Australia, I figured out a way to maintain my freedom and never feel trapped again. I started my own online business selling a line of unique umbrellas in Australia. Now when I look out the window, I can go outside and take a walk whenever I feel like it. I answer to nobody and all the hard work is worth it because I keep the rewards. When my wife comes home from work I also have the energy to focus my attention on her instead of being my old zombie self.
None of this would've been possible if I didn't take a giant leap of faith and follow my heart. It takes courage to quit your job, travel the world, and then start your life in a new country. But freedom is worth everything to me.
