Microsoft Word 2007 goes beyond the basics of a simple word processing program. Like most word processors, you can create, edit, save and print documents, but Word is a full-featured word processor. You will find many features to create professional-looking documents that are closer to print publications rather than simple word processing documents. Word 2007 can be found in all Office suite editions including the Professional Edition. - There are several Office 2007 suites including Standard, Small Business, Ultimate and Professional. The word processor, Word, does not change from suite to suite. Microsoft adds additional software to the each suite and changes its pricing to appeal to different customers. Office 2007 Professional Suite packages Word 2007 with PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, Access and Publisher. It is designed for businesses that need word processing plus want to use other tools to track their products and customers in addition to making presentations and creating marketing material.
- In Word 2007, Microsoft got rid of the drop-down menu toolbar and introduced the Ribbon. The Ribbon uses tabs and groups of tools in order to get tasks done and runs across the top of the document window. Each tab shows different categories of tools available to a user. On the Home tab, Microsoft placed groups of command which are often used by users like cutting, copying, pasting, or changing font characteristics. Other tabs like the Page Layout tab contain groups of tools to change the layout of the page like margins. Clicking on a tab takes you from one set of tools to another set of tools. Some tabs do not appear until you add something like a graphic. When you insert a graphic, then the picture tools tab appears.
- One new feature in Word 2007 is Building Blocks. Building Blocks consist of pre-formatted page additions like page numbers, headers and footers and cover pages. Other versions of Word include the ability to add basic page number, but the user had to type the text. In 2007, there are styles for these features formatted with font size, color, lines and placeholders to type in text. If you need a document cover page, you click in the "Insert tab" and click on "Cover Page." Instead of getting a blank page, you get a dialog box with style thumbnails for different cover pages to choose from which simplifies document creation. You can also add your own Building Blocks for text you often reuse like disclaimer statements.
- Another Word 2007 feature is the Equation Builder. In previous versions of Word, you needed to download a math add-in in order to create math problems, but in Word 2007, you can create math equations within the program without downloading an add-in.
- To run the Microsoft Professional Office suite including Word 2007, you need a computer with a 500 megahertz processor running a Microsoft XP or later operating system. The computer needs 250 megabytes of RAM and a two gigabyte hard drive.
