How to Create & Paint Abstract Art on a Canvas
- 1). Contemplate what type of abstract image you would like to paint on the canvas. If necessary, take notes about certain details you don't want to forget during the creation process. Inspiration for abstract art can be found online and in art books.
- 2). Draw the outline of the image on the canvas very lightly using a pencil.
- 3). Apply a small dollop of each paint color of choice on a painting palette. Acrylic paints are water based, dry faster, and are easy to clean up. Oil paints take a very long time to dry, which allows for extensive blending work that shows every brush stroke. Oil paints need to be cleaned off brushes with paint thinner instead of water. Ultimately, the choice to use acrylic or oil paints is about personal preference and esthetics.
- 4). Dip a paintbrush into the color of choice and glide it across the canvas in the area you wish to fill with color. Use careful, calculated strokes to make sure you stay in control. Wash the paintbrush thoroughly between colors to avoid a muddy finished appearance.
- 5). Blend colors by stamping a damp paintbrush over the line that needs to be blended. Continue gently tapping the colors until they melt together.
- 6). Take breaks whenever you feel tired, mentally and physically. Don't rush yourself in an attempt to finish the piece faster, as that may compromise the quality of the finished painting.
