DIY Indie-Style Art
- 1). Gather images and items that inspire you. This may include the work of artists that you admire, personal photographs, or pictures from magazines that catch your eye. As Indie art is highly personal, it is important not to lose sight of individual tastes while creating a piece. Put them all on display, either on a board or within eyesight of your work area. They will not be used to make the art, but rather to remind you of your goals as you work on it.
- 2). Decide on the art form that you would like to create. You can choose to create a simple drawing, a sculpture, or even a video piece. Think outside of the box, as Indie artists enjoy taking risks and pushing traditional artistic boundaries when making something new.
- 3). Collect art materials for your project. These should be items that you are familiar with already, and that are either free or already accessible in your own space. For example, you may select ball point pens, pencils, lined paper or found objects like candy wrappers and clothespins.
- 4). Create a sketch of the piece that you intend to create. Do this with a pencil and paper, including all details of the work. A sketch should be created for any art form, be it a painting, drawing, or even a sculpture.
- 5). Compose your art piece using your chosen materials. Follow your sketch to make the work as accurate as possible. Draw your image onto a canvas or piece of paper in pencil, and then go over it with a medium like pen or paint. For a sculptural piece, glue found objects together to create a form, be it abstract or realistic.
- 6). Share your art with others. The Indie art community is very large, as members enjoy sharing their new creations with each other, and supporting new endeavors. You can do this by joining a local art group, or even an online community that allows Indie artists to promote and sell their work, like Etsy.
