How to Remove Rust From Fiberglass
- 1). Wipe down the entire area. This will prevent other grime and buildup from interfering with rust removal. Use a cleaning rag and the spray cleaner. This may also start to loosen up the rust, so do not be surprised if some flakes come off.
- 2). Mix up a rust-removal paste of borax and lemon juice. Use half a cup of borax and 1/4 cup of lemon juice. It should make a thick, spreadable paste that will not run. If necessary, add more juice or borax to get the paste a thick, even consistency.
- 3). Spread the paste on the rust stains. Let it sit until it dries. This may take 10 to 45 minutes.
- 4). Scrub the paste off. Dampen the plastic scrubber with some white vinegar and start scrubbing the paste off using a circular, polishing motion and firm pressure. The rust should have largely "lifted" into the paste as it dried, and the stains underneath should lighten as you scrub.
- 5). Rinse off the area. Wipe it down with a cloth dampened with clear water. This will enable you to check your progress. If the rust and stains are not completely gone, you can repeat the process four more times.
- 6). Wipe down the fiberglass one more time. This will remove any remaining residue from the cleaning agents and leave your fiberglass surface pristine and shining once more.
