Sand the high spots until they are the same level as the surrounding floor surfaces, using a 100-grit sanding block. Use a bubble level to determine which areas are high.

    • 2). Sweep and vacuum the floor so it is free of all dirt and debris.

    • 3). Caulk the joints in between the subfloor boards, using a caulking gun and a tube of latex caulk. Run your finger over the bead of caulk to smooth it out and squish it into the joint. Wipe any excess caulk off the floor and off your finger with a wet painter's rag. Allow the caulk to dry for 24 hours.

    • 4). Open a can of stain-blocking primer paint. Dip the bristles of a paintbrush into the primer paint and paint a border around the wall's edges. Paint the border 4 to 6 inches wide.

    • 5). Pour 1/2 gallon of stain-blocking wood primer paint into a paint tray. Fit a 1/2-inch-nap roller cover over the spindle of a 9-inch roller frame, and then screw an extension pole into the handle of the roller.

    • 6). Dip the roller into the paint tray until the nap fibers are full of paint. Walk to the side of the room farthest from the exit and paint a 4-square-foot section with up-and-down zigzags. The zigzags ensure that all the roller lap lines are rolled out. Repeat this process until the whole floor is primed with paint. Wait 24 hours and then apply the finish coat in the same manner. Paint the border first and then the inner floor.
