About Camping Tents for Motorcycles
- Camping tents for motorcycles are tents that are packable for motorcyclists to carry when touring (which is similar to backpacking, only on a motorcycle). These tents provide privacy and shelter from nature and the elements for motorcyclists. They are available in many and various sizes, and are usually sized by the number of people each tent is meant to hold.
- Camping tents for motorcycles are made from a variety of materials, and the selection will generally come down to preference. They can roughly be divided into waterproof and non-waterproof tents. Breathable tents are usually desirable, due to condensation that will build up within a tent while in use. Some breathable tents have a second liner of mesh that provides a further barrier against insect life. A rain fly helps keep any precipitation outside.
- Unlike camping in a car, camping while riding a motorcycle means that a motorcyclist must consider storage space very carefully. Therefore, it is important to choose a camping tent that fits in a motorcycle's bags. If a motorcyclist will be camping with any amount of regularity and does not already have bags, it is advisable to consider purchasing both bags and a tent with this fact in mind. While a camping tent could technically be attached to the pillion seat of a motorcycle with bungees, a motorcyclist runs the risk of a soaked tent if precipitation hits.
- Motorcycle camping expert Bill Johns strongly advises purchasing a ground cloth or ground sheet for camping when a tent is purchased. This helps to keep ambient moisture from the ground from leaching into a tent. While it is a simple device, it can add years to a tent's usable life. However, it should be noted that the sheet or cloth should not exceed the area of the bottom of the tent. If it does, it will capture water on top of itself which will then be wicked up by the tent, defeating its entire purpose.
- Fiberglass tent poles should be avoided due to an extreme propensity for breakage. Aluminum tent poles may cost a little more, but their longevity and durability make up for the initial cost outlay.
