How to Apply Grout to Wall Tile

    • 1). Remove excess thinset mortar or tile adhesive from the tile joints, using a utility knife.

    • 2). Dampen the joints between the tiles with a wet sponge. Moistening the tile joints will prevent the tiles from absorbing the moisture from the grout before it has time to be properly applied.

    • 3). Mix the grout per manufacturer directions in a clean bucket.

    • 4). Apply the grout to the tile joints. Hold the rubber tile float at a 45-degree angle while applying the grout to the joints between the tiles. Fill the joints completely with the grout.

    • 5). Wipe away the excess grout with the rubber tile float. Hold the float at a 45-degree angle and pass it diagonally across the tiles to wipe away the extra grout. Place the extra grout into the bucket. Allow the tile to dry for approximately 30 minutes.

    • 6). Remove the thin layer of grout from the top of the tiles, using a damp grout sponge. Be careful that you do not remove the grout from the tile joints. Once you have wiped away the grout, allow the grout to dry per manufacturer directions.

    • 7). Wipe away the grout haze from the top of the tiles with a dry, clean cloth. Wait until the grout has had time to dry, and buff the grout from the top of the tiles.
