No Sugar Added, Dairy Free Piña Colada Protein Smoothie

Making smoothies is the fastest way to ensure a healthy breakfast or meal on the go. Whether you work outside the home or not, going without a meal can truly ruin your healthy eating resolve. Not eating breakfast can steer you in the wrong direction leading right to the vending machine or worse yet the drive through. Making time to make yourself a protein filled breakfast just takes some planning. Making sure you have on hand the freezer and pantry essentials to create fantastic on-the- go smoothies is the most important task you can do for yourself. If you're new to the sugar free life, you need to have on hand some basic sugar free substitutes to make every recipe that you used to enjoy.

This smoothie could be used as a snack in between meals to carry you over until dinner. Make it ahead and keep in the fridge for later in the day. Double the recipe and you could even make popsicles out of the mixture. Blend as the recipe suggests and place into molds of choice for a delicious frozen treat!

This smoothie does not need any sweetener in my opinion. But if you do feel you need a bit more sweetness than the pineapple provides you could also throw in a banana if you like, but that would increase your carbs. If you are watching your carbs or are diabetic you should use a sugar free alternative. My favorite sweetener these days is erythritol as it has a subtle sweetness but no aftertaste. I like to mix it with my favorite vanilla flavored liquid stevia. I also look for protein powder that does not contain sugar and uses either stevia or erythritol.

If you're really not a fan of coconut milk, other dairy free options would be unsweetened almond milk, unsweetened cashew milk, or rice milk. Taste and adjust after blending and see if you need more rum extract. Add more ice if you feel it's too thick in consistency. Add another scoop of protein powder if you feel it's not thick enough. Otherwise enjoy this tropical inspired smoothie!
