5 Simple Ways to Promote Your Blog

If you are serious about your blog, you've put a lot of time and energy into writing a good one.  It is informative and personal and it keeps your readers invested.  If you find your readership is flagging even though the quality of your blog is good, follow these tips about how to promote your blog.

Forums:

Become a presence in forums dedicated to your niche.  If you have a blog about gluten-free cooking, make sure to be a part of several forums dedicated to allergy-free and gluten-free living as well as more general cooking forums.  Use your signature line to your advantage by linking to your blog.  You can link to the home page or you can link to specific posts using link text.

Answer forums like Yahoo Answers also present opportunities to promote yourself as an expert on your niche's topic.  Make sure when you post on forums to post genuinely and appropriately.  Do not simply log on to promote your site.  You will be ignored.  Rather, show yourself to be a knowledgeable professional, and people will want to know more about you.

Social Media:

Use social media like Facebook and Twitter to promote your blog and keep your audience up to date on your work.  Do post links to your newest blogs, but don't let that be the only thing you do.  You can also post other links relevant to your subject, start intriguing conversations, and post updates about yourself and your community.

Other bloggers, comments, and conversations:

One of the best ways to promote your blog is to let other bloggers know about you.  Don't waste their time by spamming or promoting yourself to bloggers outside of your niche.  Do your research.  If you're passionate about your subject, you're probably already a fan of some bloggers within your niche.  Add useful non-promotional comments on their posts.

Eventually, you can send them individual messages complimenting their blogs.  You can now ask to exchange links or content with a link back to your site. Sometimes, you can even just ask for a link back to one of your posts if it is useful to their readers.  The key here is to be respectful and be specific.  At the first hint of spamming, the other blogger will simply delete your message.

Creating alliances and even friendships with other bloggers can be an excellent way to promote your blog in an organic fashion.  Make sure to return the favor by linking to these other blogs on your main page and within your posts, as appropriate.  Don't assume that just because you're linking to their blog, they'll automatically link to yours.

Guest blog:

After you've made alliances with other blogs, ask if you can be a guest blogger on their blog.  This is a way to further your budding relationship and get some great advertising for your blog at the same time.

Paid advertising:

Choose paid advertising well, and you'll generate enough traffic to pay for the expense.  A good way to do this is to find out which blog posts are the most viewed or searched-for and advertise these relevant posts.  Then link to your main page and other relevant posts within these advertised posts to make the most of your advertising money. Make sure visitors have a way to opt into your email list or follow your blog for future updates.
