How to Replace Prehung Exterior Doors
- 1). Put on all protective gear.
- 2). Pry off the old door molding, using a crowbar. Try not to break the molding if you want to reuse it. You also may use it for a template of the new molding you will install.
- 3). Remove the screws that hold the door to the stud wall, using a cordless drill and screw bit. If the door is nailed in place then cut the nails off with a Sawzall.
- 4). Pull out the old door with a helper. Grab a hold of the brick-mold on both sides and pull toward the outside. If the door is stuck, you may have to cut away some of the rope insulation or spray foam that was initially installed. Cut it out, using a utility knife.
- 5). Put the new door into place. Insert a couple of shims underneath the door. Use your helper to make sure the door is as straight as possible.
- 6). Level the new door and install a couple of drywall screws into each side of the door frame and into the stud wall.
- 7). Check to see if the door is level all the way round the frame. Insert shims where necessary to ensure this. Install drywall screw as you go to hold the door to the stud wall.
- 8). Insert rope insulation into the gaps between the door frame and wall studs. Rope insulation comes in a roll form. Unroll it, bit by bit, and press into place, working your way around the entire door.
- 9). Spray in nonexpanding foam to cover any smaller gaps. Let dry for several hours.

Apply a bead of silicone to the molding, working your way around the entire door frame. Let dry overnight.
