- 1). Know the job duties besides fighting fires. A firefighter investigates and inspects buildings to make sure safety equipment, like smoke alarms, is working properly. The firefighter handles many emergencies, such as animal rescues, bomb threats, gas leaks and hazardous spills.
- 2). Meet requirements. An individual must be at least 18 years old to be considered for the position. She has to be a high school graduate or have a general equivalency diploma (GED). She must also pass drug, written and physical tests. The physical test determines an applicant's ability to perform certain tasks. For instance, he must be able to break down doors, run up flights of stairs, handle and carry a high pressure hose and carry an enormous amount of weight.
- 3). Have the qualities needed. A firefighter needs a variety of skills and abilities for the job. These qualities include courage, dependability, endurance, self-discipline, good judgment and strength. An applicant also needs the desire to serve the public.
- 4). Excel in training and probationary period. Once hired, a perspective firefighter must complete two to four months of training. The training consists of learning about how to prevent fires, implementing all emergency procedures and fire-fighting techniques. This training is administered via the local fire department and consists of hands-on training and classroom instruction. Complete approximately six months of probation.
