Taking Care of Your Bloodhound - Part II
Taking care of Your Bloodhound is or should be a very high priority.
They do need care and lots of love.
Some people think they can just teach them a few tricks, let them outside to do their business and they will be a very obedient dog...
not the Bloodhound.
Now comes the fun part of taking care of your new pet.
Although some folks think that the Bloodhound just lies around all day couldn't be more wrong.
They need lots of exercise and room to play and let their bones grow and their muscles work, about an hour per day minimum.
In order for them to be sociable with other humans and or animals, take them with you everywhere you can while they are little to let the become familiar with other things rather than the same old hum-drum kennel, food, sleep routine.
A dog who has good social graces will be welcomed just about everywhere.
If you love your pup, there will be two major things that you MUST do for them.
One is crate train them.
They are less likely to make mistakes in their own bed and wait for you to take them out.
Start them at a young age.
The other is fencing.
A bloodhound will follow their nose.
If you don't have an adequate fence or enclosure to keep them in, they will either end up missing, stolen or dead.
Never ever allow your dog to roam.
It's is a good idea to keep several identification places on your dog.
One of course is dog tags.
The other could be a tattoo or a chip so they can be identified if they do get lost.
What you do in your spare time with your Bloodhound is entirely up to you.
They will get bored and look for things to keep themselves occupied if you don't help occupy their time.
Some things to try are learning how to track or trail.
This will be very helpful especially if you would like to become involved in search and rescue.
You could possibly want to train your Bloodhound to work in obedience or agility.
There are classes for all that you could find in your area that can be very helpful in that area..
Whatever you decide, taking care of your Bloodhound takes time, patience and a lot of discipline.
Always reward your animal when they have done well and love them.
They too will do the same thing in return.
There is no greater feeling in the world then to be hugged by your Bloodhound.
