How Do I Read Feet With Rulers?

    • 1). Sit in the chair. Place your bare foot on the piece of paper. Trace around it with the pen or pencil, holding the pen or pencil straight up and down the entire time. Ensure that the pen or pencil stays in constant contact with your foot.

    • 2). Measure between the bottom point of your heel and the top of your tallest toe. Subtract 5 mm or 1/5 inch. Record the number.

    • 3). Measure the distance at the widest point of your foot--make sure the two points are roughly parallel to each other. Chances are this will be between the inside ball of your foot and the outside of your foot, just in front of the pinky toe. Record the number.

    • 4). Repeat the measurement process for the other foot. Use the measurement from the largest foot. If there is a significant difference between the two measurements, consider wearing two different sizes of shoe.

    • 5). Consult a conversion chart to convert your length and width measurements, in either inches or centimeters, to a shoe size (see Resources). Remember that the length and width of your foot, and hence the shoe size, will vary slightly depending on the thickness of your sock.
