How to Lacquer Paint

    • 1). Clean the surface of your object thoroughly. Use an ammonia-based cleaner that will cut through any grease and grime. Oils from your hands or other sources will interfere with the primer and paint's ability to bond, potentially causing bubbling and peeling in the paint's finish over time.

    • 2). Sand the object using medium grit sandpaper. Small objects can be sanded by hand. Larger objects will be more effectively and quickly sanded by using a palm sander. Palm sanders can be found at most home improvement stores.

    • 3). Switch to fine-grit sandpaper and sand the object again. Fine-grit sandpaper will smooth the object, creating a good surface for the lacquer paint.

    • 4). Wipe down the object with a damp rag to remove all sanding dust.

    • 5). Prime the object by spraying it with a bonding primer. Spray primer is available from Krylon and Rustoleum. The can will say "bonding primer" on the front of the can. If using a spray gun, fill the canister with primer according to the spray gun's instructions. Spray the primer onto the object in a steady back-and-forth motion, slightly overlapping each pass of the sprayer. Allow the primer to dry.

    • 6). Apply the lacquer paint using the same method used to apply the primer. Lacquer paint is also available in spray cans from Krylon and Rustoleum or can be applied using a spray gun. Apply two to three coats of lacquer paint. Allow the paint to dry completely.
