Tips for Removing Blackheads

    The Basics

    • Blackheads are made up of sebum and keratin, which are oily substances produced by your glands. Blackheads are technically considered a medical problem that needs treatment. You can either deal with them at a facial spa or at home, depending on how bad the problem is and what you can afford. Some of the causes of blackheads are dehydration, excess dead skin cells, excess oil production in the skin, excess scrubbing of the skin, use of too many face products, as well as other medical issues (such as thyroid problems or constipation).

    Topical Treatments

    • There are many topical treatments you can use at home or get from a dermatologist. First, try an exfoliating scrub on your blackheads. Make sure it contains low-potency benzoyl peroxide and is meant for removing dead skin cells. You can also use microdermabrasion, which can be done at a doctor's office or at home with a kit from a beauty supply store. Topical retinoids such as Retin-A will help prevent and reduce the occurrence of acne and blackheads. This type of treatment may take a long period of time, though, as it works by reducing oil production.

    Diet and Face Strips

    • You can use the quick fix of blackhead face strips. These are paper-like strips that you placed on your nose, forehead and chin, then dampen with water, let dry for five to 10 minutes, then rip away to pull out the blackheads. This will remove the surface blackheads that can be seen most easily, but won't solve the problem inside the pores. Make sure to read the instructions.

Another way to help prevent future blackheads is by staying hydrated and altering your diet. Acne can be caused by bad eating habits, which will increase oil production. Avoid oily and fatty foods and incorporate a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables into your diet.
