Crete - Megalonisi

Crete is the largest of the Greek islands and the biggest suntrap in the Aegean. This popular island has something for everyone - step back in time and visit some of Crete's archaeological jewels, hit one of the many Blue Flag beaches, explore the invigorating mountain villages which simply ooze Greek charm or if you fancy a spot of retail therapy visit one of main towns where you'll find chic boutiques alongside markets brimming with local produce.

Step Back in Time

From ancient Minoan Palaces to Roman cities, Venetian fortresses and Byzantine churches, Crete has a tremendous and unique history.
  • Crete was the birthplace of Europe's first civilisation and at Knossos you can be transported back to the Minoan culture that flourished here 4500 years ago. The introduction of bronze making by Indo-European migrants enabled the Minoans to build better boats and expand their trading routes making them a powerful sea-going empire. Pottery making and the first Cretan script emerged and soon they were building palaces fit for a king. Minoan culture came to an abrupt end around 1450 BC, some say due to a cataclysmic volcano eruption on Santorini, others due to devastating earthquakes.
  • At the striking Minoan hillside site of Gournia, you can wander the narrow stone paved lanes and see remains of tightly packed houses. Excavated between 1901 and 1904, the name Gournia (‘basins') comes from the large number of stone vessels found, many of which are visible today.
  • Situated half way up a hill and with wonderful views of the Mesara Plain and Mt Psiloritis, Phaistos was the second most important Minoan city after Knossos.  Unlike Knossos, you will need to use your imagination to construct the 3 storey palace from the low walls which remain. Try to get there early late to avoid the crowds!
  • More recent history, but none the less interesting is to be found on the island of Spinalonga, the last leper colony in Europe. You can take boat excursions to the island. Soak up the atmosphere as you wander around its poignant streets, houses and lepers' church before we cast off for a swim in an isolated cove and a BBQ lunch onboard.

Lastly, when visiting Crete, you need to research your hotel well. After all this is probably the most important part of your holiday. There's a vast range of acommodation available on the island, from small and friendly apartments to ultra luxury resorts and everything in between. Of course, you can visit tripadvisor and read customer reviews. You can ask friends, colleagues or do research online. We also recommend using a local company who has the very best insights and relationships with the hoteliers. What's more they can also provide you with helpful tips and suggestions on what to do when you're on holiday.
