How to Replace String on a Ryobi Weedeater

    • 1). Advance the line on a Ryobi weedeater trimmer by tapping the string head on grass while running the engine at full throttle. The line will advance, and eventually run out. At that point you will need to restring the machine. Stop the engine and disconnect the spark plug.

    • 2). Turn the trimmer upside down. Rest the trimmer on its engine and lay the cutting end on a bench or some firm surface.

    • 3). Remove the string head from the drive shaft. Unscrew the head and be careful not to lose the little spring or bolt. Losing the spring can bring a rapid end to your yard-work activities while you go and buy another one.

    • 4). Open the string head by pushing down on the latches.

    • 5). Cut a piece of line about 25 feet long.

    • 6). Rotate the knob on the string head until the line on the knob lines up with the arrows on the top of the spring head.

    • 7). Insert one end of the line into the eyelet on the side of the string head and push the line through to the eyelet on the other side. Continue pushing until the head is in the middle of the string---about 12 1/2 feet in. The string should be even.

    • 8). Rotate the knob on the string head to wind the line. The winding could be clockwise or counterclockwise, depending on the model. It will be indicated, however. Wind the line until there's about 8 inches protruding from each eyelet.

    • 9). Reverse the dismantling procedure. Put the cover back on the head. Place the head back on the drive shaft. Seat the head well. Reseat the spring and knob. The hex bolt goes inside the knob.

Tighten the knob and reconnect the spark plug line.
