How to Make Paint Hardener at Home

    • 1). Remove the lid from the can of paint to determine just how much wet paint is left over. For cans that contain 1 inch or less of paint, simply place them in a well-ventilated area with the lid off and let the paint harden over a few days.

    • 2). Scoop 1 cup amounts of clay-based kitty litter, shredded paper, or sawdust and then dump it into cans that contain more than 1 inch of paint. The dry materials will soak up any liquids that are in the paint and harden it. That way, once the paint is collected, it won't spill.

    • 3). Churn the mixture using a paint stirrer and add more of the dry, absorbent substance you used until the paint mixture takes on a cooked oatmeal-like thickness. Once the consistency becomes difficult to stir, leave the stirrer in place and set the can in a well-ventilated area. If you leave the paint for two to three days, you'll notice that the stirrer will be stuck in the can. At that point, it's ready for disposal.
