Burglar & Fire Alarm Installation Training

    Programs

    • Individuals who want to learn burglar and fire alarm installation can complete training programs at community colleges, such as a two-year associate degree program in fire alarm technology. They also can train through organizations such as the Electronic Security Association (see Resource section).

In addition, students can learn the trade through an apprenticeship program that lasts about four years and combines classroom instruction with paid, on-the-job training. Beginning students receive about half of what experienced journeymen are paid, but their pay increases as their experience grows. Students actually can take a pre-apprenticeship class that lasts five to six months at a community college to prepare for the four-year training program and connect with companies to apprentice with.

    Admission

    • To get into a burglar and fire alarm installation training program, some schools require students to have a high school diploma or GED. However, other programs are available to high school students, and some apprenticeships do not require students to have a high school diploma. Still, most employers prefer candidates who have completed high school.

    Classes

    • Courses in burglar and fire alarm installation cover topics such as fire alarm codes, basic electrical wiring, low-voltage basics, automatic sprinkler concepts, smoke detector information and national electrical codes. Students also study how to read blueprints, install and repair burglar/fire alarm systems, and use power and hand tools such as soldering tools.

The Electronic Security Association specifically covers access control, video surveillance and camera installation. Training programs in this field should give students hands-on experience with providing cost estimates for installation as well as inspecting/testing systems to identify loose connections or circuit malfunctions. Completing work orders and test/maintenance reports also are important areas covered.

    Certification

    • After completing training in burglar and fire alarm installation, students can seek voluntary certification through the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies by passing an examination (see Resource section). Those who studied with the Electronic Security Association can complete a certification exam to receive the certified fire alarm technician designation as well. In addition, some manufacturers offer certification for installing and maintaining their specific systems. Some states additionally require fire alarm technicians to be licensed.
