How to Do a Mechanical Splice

- 1). Strip the fiber buffer (insulator) from the last 1/2 inch at the end of each optical fiber you intend to join using a wire stripper. Clean the stripped fibers with isopropyl alcohol and a lint free cloth.
- 2). Insert the first fiber tip into the splice core according to the directions that came with your mechanical splice. Insert the second fiber you intend to join into the splice core until it butts against the end of the first optical fiber.
- 3). Set the splice core containing the two joined fibers into the bottom half of the splice housing.
- 4). Snap the top half of the splice housing into the bottom half of the splice housing. Some housings have small holes into which you can add a drop of cyanoacrylate adhesive or epoxy if you want the splice to be permanent.
- 5). Arrange multiple mechanical splices in a splice tray.
