How to Make a Finger Splint With a Popsicle Stick
- 1). Gather two popsicle sticks of equal size of 8 to 12 inches in length, and any type of adhesive tape that is readily available. If you cannot find any tape, four or five strips of fabric may be used.
- 2). Place one popsicle stick underneath your finger, or alongside your finger-depending on the location of the injury-running in the same direction as the finger. For example, if a finger is broken and a bone is protruding upward, you would want to place the sticks on the sides. If the tendons have been torn from the bone and the finger is curled, Utahmountainbiking.com recommends using a splint to keep the finger straight and flat; this would necessitate placing the sticks on the top and the bottom. The website also describes several types of sports related injuries to fingers including fractures, dislocation, sprains and volar plate injuries (See References).
- 3). Place another popsicle stick on top or on the other side of your finger, parallel to the other stick.
- 4). Wrap tape or fabric of any sort around the finger several times to hold the two popsicle sticks in place. Be careful not to make it overly tight.
- 5). Tape or tie the splinted finger to the next finger for stability.
