Fun Effects With GIMP Plug-ins

    Clothify

    • SCM files are plug-ins for GIMP. SCM is the abbreviation for a Script-fu script, a code that tells the filtered area how to render in a specific pattern. The "Clothify" script allows you to make graphics look like textiles. Be certain that your image is in RGB mode, a color model in which red, green and blue are added together to produce a variety of colors. RGB mode allows you to use most of the filters in GIMP. Choose "Image," "Mode" and "RGB." Select the area that you want to transform and click on "Filters," "Artistic" and "Clothify." Choose the parameters for the blurring, "Azimuth" for lighting direction and the elevation and depth of lines. Click "OK" to render your choices.

    Coffee Stain

    • Coffee Stain can give your image the semblance of working long nights at the office. The filter gives you up to 10 stains and the option to darken the image. Click "Filters," "Decor," "Coffee Stain" and "OK." The filter adds background filters such as "Gaussian Blur" and "Transparency" to the image.

    Edge Detect Filters

    • "Edge Detect" filters can give an embossed look to images. The "Sobel" filter allows you to create a gray paper texture. Click "Filters," "Edge Detect," "Sobel" and "OK." You also can use filters such as "Neon" to create lighting effects. Click "Filters," "Edge Detect," "Neon" and "OK."

    Gaussian Blur

    • The "Blur" filters allow you to create soft focuses for images. The most simple of these is the "Gaussian Blur" that will give a gentle texture. Choose "Filters," "Blur" and "Gaussian Blur" and then the "Blur Radius." Click "OK." There are other "Blur" applications to use such as "Pixelize," which will turn graphics into the chunks of pixels. Choose "Filters," "Blur" and "Pixeilize." Choose "Filters," "Blur" and "Motion Blur" to put action into images.

    Jigsaw

    • Jigsaw is an easy way to create jigsaw puzzles in GIMP. Click "Filters," "Render" and "Jigsaw." Choose the number of tiles, size of the bevel edges and jigsaw style. Click "OK."

    Light and Shadow

    • Lighting is an important part of graphic manipulation. The "Light" and "Shadow" filters give you a wide range of effects to use on your image. Two interesting effects that complement each other in GIMP are "Rainy Landscape" and "Sunny Landscape." Click on "Filters" and "Light and Shadow" and either "Sunny" or "Rainy Landscape." Click "OK."

    Ripple

    • "Ripple" under the "Distorts" filter options will give the image a watery texture. Choose "Filters," "Distorts" and "Ripple." Choices include horizontal or vertical orientation, wave type and edges.

    Sepia

    • There are many filter sets that you can download from the Internet. One of the filter sets is FX_Foundry that has photo effects with sepia toning, midnight sepia or vintage effects that create old-fashioned graphics.
